The Uses of Trees in the Landscape
Trees are often positioned in the landscape to serve a specific purpose. The following are some of the functions of trees in the landscape:
To provide shade: Shade trees keep temperatures inside houses cooler in summer as well as providing outdoor shade . A well-placed tree can reduce the summer room temperature of a frame house as much as 20 degrees in certain areas. To serve this purpose, trees may be planted as close as 15 feet to the house. Larger spreading trees, such as oaks, must be given more generous spacing.
To relieve bare spots: The end walls of many houses often have a bare look. This bareness can be relieved by planting a small or medium-sized tree near the side of the house. This creates a softening effect that a planting of shrubs alone may not accomplish.
To ensure privacy: A carefully positioned tree can create privacy by screening a porch or terrace.
To accent the landscape: Flowering trees or trees with graceful and interesting branching habits are often used as accents in the landscape. They can be used to direct attention to certain areas or to act as a terminal planting for a hedge or wall.
To break monotony: Trees and shrubs can be used to break the monotony of an obtrusive architectural feature or enclosure. The planting, however, should be placed off center so that the feature does not appear to have been cut in half. White brick walls, fencing, and other architectural means of enclosing property may be attractive in themselves, but can become monotonous unless softened by planting materials.
As windbreaks: Tall evergreens are used as windbreaks, protecting the house from north and northwest winds in the winter. These should be placed about 50 feet from the house to be effective.
Deciduous trees: are a vital part of landscapes today. Deciduous trees with various flowering quality, colors, texture, height, hardiness, and ornamental use are available. The different ways to purchase deciduous trees are bare root, balled and burlapped, and containerized. Planting for each of these is different because the tree must be planted to the original depth it was in the nursery or container. Staking and guying are procedures necessary for maintaining the stability of the tree. General maintenance (watering, fertilizing, and mulching) of the deciduous tree is important to ensure continued productivity of the plant.
Green Tip: Planting Deciduous trees on the South, east or west sides of your home lower your heating and cooling expenses. In the summer, the trees shade your house from the hot sun. In the winter the trees allow the warm sun light in to your home and raise your house temperature.
